A classic novel at the center of racial identity discussions in America. Clare Kendry leads a dangerous life, married to a white man unaware of her African American heritage, while distancing herself from her past. Her childhood friend, Irene Redfield, also light-skinned, chooses to remain within the African American community yet ignores the ongoing racism that affects her family’s happiness. A chance encounter brings both women face-to-face with the secrets they’ve kept and the fears they’ve hidden.
