Gertrude and Claudius: A Novel

In this imaginative audiobook adaptation of John Updike's Gertrude and Claudius, listeners are invited to explore the backstory of the infamous couple from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Updike reinterprets Gertrude and Claudius, presenting them not merely as villains but as complex characters shaped by fond intentions and family dysfunction. The narrative provides a fresh perspective on their relationship set against the backdrop of a sullen, erratic prince plagued by discontent.

With an aim to keep the storytelling engaging and accessible, Updike transitions from the mists of Scandinavian legend to the lively atmosphere of the Globe. This audiobook emphasizes the romance that precedes the tragedy, allowing listeners to experience a different side of these historical figures. Perfect for fans of Shakespeare and those interested in a deeper characterization of classic literary figures.
